Technologies & Solutions

Chempolis has the most versatile biorefining technology that converts the widest range of biomasses to pure bioproducts with superior yield.

Chempolis’ technologies offer a highly sustainable and profitable solution for the current need for renewable, unpolluting and carbon neutral production of transportation fuels, biochemicals, packaging materials, textiles and pulp. Non-wood and non-food biomasses such as straw, bagasse, corn stover, grasses, empty fruit bunch and bamboo but also hardwood and softwood can be used as raw material.

Our expertise across the entire processing chain – from biomass to final product – covers everything from laboratory testing and feasibility assessments, conceptual, process and plant engineering to implementation of biorefinery projects. Our highly skilled experts will fine tune the process to fit exactly our customers purposes.

Sustainable biorefining technologies are expected to last for decades, hence reliability, usability, and safety are important priorities. Our dedication to create clean and efficient solutions has resulted in biorefining technologies that have been rated as the greenest economically viable option available by International Finance Corporation and US Energy Department, as well as in more than 100 granted patents.

Chempolis’ technologies and related process proprietary systems

Chempolis’ biorefining technologies are based on a multi-product platform, which generates higher sales revenues with lower investment and operation costs. The base of the technology is an innovative, highly selective biosolvent, which overcomes the challenges typically faced by other biorefining technologies.

The competitive edge of Chempolis’ biorefining technology platform is not only that it enables selective production of multiple value-added products from renewable raw materials, but selectivity also means no waste. The process is effluent-free and energy self-sufficient, the process chemicals and water are recycled.

formico®- technologies

A biorefinery based on formico®-technology meets the three key aspects of sustainability – environmental, economic, and social – and can convert biomass into a range of products.

formico® technologies have the highest efficiency with effluent free biorefining technology. Various raw materials, such as hardwood and softwood, straw, grasses, bagasse, and many other residues can be selectively converted to sustainable biobased products. Due to rapid impregnation of the biosolvent into the raw material, cooking takes place quickly and at low temperature. As the delignification is highly selective, the yield and quality of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin are optimal.

formicobio™, formicofib™, formicochem™ and formicodeli™ are technologies for delignification and fractionation of the raw material into wide variety of high-quality products.

formicopure™ is a distillation-based purification system that recovers the biosolvent and water as well as specific biochemicals produced.

formicocont™ is an automation and control system that ensures a high degree of capacity utilization and provides a continuous optimization of biorefineries based on formico® technologies.

We are here to help you to make the future sustainable.

Our innovation center is continuously improving the current formico®-technology as well as finding new sustainable solutions for our customers needs. Everything is done in close collaboration with business, demonstration plant and technology team to ensure the most profitable and sustainable solutions.

We have a well-equipped laboratory with reactors, evaporators and columns for chemical reactions and separations. We carry out laboratory fractionations prior larger scale trials in demonstration plant. We also have extensive analytics for raw materials and different products.

Chempolis’ technology team carries out the feasibility and conceptual studies as well as the basic engineering for biorefineries based on formico®-technology. The highly skilled professionals will customize the biorefinery concept to meet the customers requirements from raw material to desired products in the most profitable way. The deep understanding of the chemistry and process is the key to the best results.

Chempolis’ demonstration plant is a very important part of the company. It supports the business unit and technology team by serving data and products from large scale trials. Continuous development of the processes and finding solutions for customers needs are the everyday work of the team. The experts in demonstration plant are not afraid on challenges but live from them.

Typical 2G technology is based on steam explosion, where substantial process yield losses are due to mechanical grinding of raw material and unselective hydrolysis of feedstock. A kraft pulp mill suffers as well from unselective fractionation leading to substantial hemicellulose fraction being burnt for energy together with lignin to produce steam needed for the pulp mill operation. Thanks to very selective fractionation with the biosolvent, the Chempolis’ process is able to utilize all feedstock components to high-value end products with almost full yield.
